WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN END GRAIN AND EDGE GRAIN?

  • An End Grain Cutting board is a board, wherein the wood grains are perpendicular to the cutting surface, and not parallel as in ordinary cutting boards. End Grain teak boards are formed by little pieces glued together to construct an elegant and amazing pattern. The end grain wood fibers absorb the impact of the knife blade while chopping, allowing your knife to stay sharper and your board surfaces to stay smoother.

WHY NOT PLASTIC FOR CUTTING BOARDS?

  • According to a scientific study on Plastic and Wooden Chopping Boards, conducted by Dean O. Cliver, Ph. D, it transpired that wooden cutting boards are, in fact, hygienic since certain types of wood do seem to exhibit antibacterial properties, while plastic boards have been scientifically proven to harbor bacteria inside the cut grooves.

BEFORE THE FIRST USE

  • Our boards are pre-oiled and ready to use. Before first use, wash, rinse, and dry with a kitchen towel. We use a mixture of mineral oil and natural beeswax to coat. However, we recommend you apply Teakhaus oil or mineral oil regularly.

HOW TO WASH YOUR CUTTING BOARD?

  • Keep your Teakhaus cutting board sanitized by simply washing it! Wash your cutting board after every use.
  1. Hand wash with hot, soapy water after each use.
  2. Rinse.
  3. Dry it with a kitchen towel, or better yet, let it air dry.
  4. Store it only when it is completely dry or display it on the counter.
  5. Do not put it in a dishwasher and do not soak it in water.
  • Wood is a natural material and tends to expand and contract. Too much moisture can cause cracks and splits. We recommend you don't store the board until it is completely dry.

HOW TO REMOVE ODORS OR STAINS?

  • A teak cutting board rarely absorbs odors or stains. Yet, it can happen! Only three natural ingredients are needed to remove odors or stains: lemon, salt, and baking soda.
  1. Cut a lemon and rub it on the cutting board.
  2. Sprinkle the board generously with kosher or table salt, or baking soda (the salt or baking soda will absorb any odors, flavors, and stains).
  3. Build a paste over the board by rubbing the lemon and squeezing the juice.
  4. Let it dry for a few hours.
  5. Remove the dry paste with a spatula or your hands.
  6. Wash, rinse, and dry the board, and be sure to oil it afterward.

HOW TO OIL YOUR CUTTING BOARD?

  • Teak's naturally high oil content acts as a water repellent; this oil will keep your board hydrated for longer periods of time. Oiling twice a month will keep your board healthy.
  1. Only use Teakhaus maintenance products. You can also use your favorite mineral oil or seasoning stick for the same results.
  2. Let the oil absorb for at least six hours; for better results, let it sit overnight.
  3. Wipe off any remaining oil using a dry, clean cloth.
  4. Do not let your board become dry; lack of oiling can result in cracks, warps, or splits.
  5. AVOID using any cooking oil (olive oil, canola oil, etc.). These oils can become rancid.

WHY I NEED TO OIL MY CUTTING BOARD?

  • To increase the board life to a lifetime, to avoid cracks or splits, to bring life the fabulous colors, and to keep safe from any bacteria.

MY BOARD IS SHOWING KNIFE MARKS… IS THAT NORMAL?

  • It is perfectly normal! Teakwood is a medium-hardwood. The hardness of wood is related to durability and stability. Teak's hardness is not too soft to provide a luxurious cutting experience and not too hard to keep your knives sharp. You can't avoid knife marks, but you can repair them once in a while. We recommend sanding your cutting board when the marks are deep.
  • You could start with medium-coarse grit sandpaper (100) and finish with fine-coarse grit, wash, and oil your board, and it will look new again.
